There are so many moments of brilliance in the legacy left behind by Yves Saint Laurent that it is very hard to say anything is one of his finest moments. But this is close. We've all heard that quote from cartoonist Bob Thaves that Ginger Rogers "did everything he (about Fred Astaire) did backwards…and in high heels!" and the dresses she wore always floated. When you were 17, you wanted to be Grace Slick but as you get older, you look to icons like Babe Paley and Ginger Rogers for style. Combed honey silk organza that has a complicated construction to show no closures anywhere yet it is not a delicate piece of fluff. Had it been chiffon, maybe but this is crisp... diaphonous. Let's talk about how this one is made - you have a hidden zip at the side at the waist so you step in and fasten the internal grosgrain with tiny hooks. The bell sleeve bodice crosses over for a little opacity but not much. Then there is an attached sash that wraps around and ties where you want it to, punctuated with two amber half-moons that are quite weighty. Finished with a cluster of millinery silk flowers at the left shoulder, the whole thing is entirely sheer. Everything comes together - fabric, cut, slhouette. The bodice has been left partially open but you can snap it so it is a jewel neckline. Rive Gauche label in the internal grosgrain waist (you'd see it anywhere else). Bust up to 34", waist 25", shoulder to shoulder 15", outer sleeve 24" and total length 48". Think very small 6 or 4. Excellent condition. $3100.00 |
