1970s Southern Belle Silk Gown with Organza Hat

don't be deceived by the sweet smile of a southern belle The South has maintained its traditions while the rest of the country around it changes changes changes. There are cities in the south that feel so distinctly European that you forget you're in the States, until some big redneck in a Dodge pick-up sidles up beside you at a stop light and hurls a wad of chewing tobacco between the space where his two front teeth used to be. And then are the Southern girls - sweet as can be, they can rip your spleen out of your thoracic cavity with their bare hands if they wanted to. Absolutely cotton candy and smiles, beneath the polite exterior lies a fiery vixen that is quick to remind you - you Yankee you - just who really did win the war. They think it's them - we think it's us - let's call the whole thing off. A cream mousseline de soie gown with a high natural waist and sheer upper bodice of white re-embroidered silk lace and pleated to the waist. Very full, sheer sleeves gather tightly at the wrist with elongated cuffs of lace and the belt is made if ivory silk velvet, buttoning in back. Modified train and a lining of ivory silk crepe, it is the silk organza hat that gives this the flavor of mint juleps and calls to mind swags of Spanish moss hanging from the trees above you. Scalloped all around, it is adorned with matching lace. We love this with your hair down, in big tumbling waves like Jaclyn Smith on Charlie's Angels. Sweet but not cutesy, it was designed by William Caitlin. Bust measures 34", shoulder to shoulder 14.5", outer sleeve 24.5", waist 27" and length 54". Hat will fit a 21.5" head and has a comb attached inside to keep it in place. Both are in excellent condition. $825.00
