Q: How the heck should
I know what hat size I wear?
A : Unless you've been buying, and wearing, hats for years, you may be understandably clueless when it comes to hat sizes. While we would love to be able to measure the inside of every hat, some floppy brims make it nearly impossible to get an accurate measurement. Therefore, a little math is in order. We are basket cases when it comes to algebraic equations and if we had to figure out e=mc2 in order to buy a great hat, we'd probably just opt for shaving our heads. Enter the ordinary calculator. With a simple tape measure and an adding machine, you can figure out if you need a size 7.5 or if that 6.5 is going to fit your 22" noggin. Stick with us on this one, girls, because this is the sort of information that proves to be handy, and hip, over the long haul. To find out what size hat you wear : 1. Measure the circumference of your head usually about 3/4" above eyebrows, where you think you're going to be wearing your hat. This does not mean tipped back on your head like Debbie Gibson in "Electric Youth". Pull it down. 2. Measure snugly to 1/8" for an accurate number. 3. Divide by pi ( 3.1415 ) to find your hat size. To find out what size head that hat size will fit: 1. Multiply the hat size by pi and you should be pretty dang close to your circumference. This is not the anal-retentive method for determining hat sizes. Our make-it-easy method will throw you off about a small fraction of an inch but we feel it is an inconsequential amount and will not affect the comfort or fit. |
