The late Sybil Connolly was Europe's answer to what goes on with Japanese fashion all the time - innovative textiles. Best known for her crystal pleated linen, this fabric is so unbelievably light and intricate, starting with fine Irish linen and pleated into the gills of a mushroom. While Italy has perfected certain fabrics, it is only the Japanese that really do unusual things - unconventional things but Sybill was doing them in the late 50s and throughout the 60s. A midnight blue linen suit with a very slim skirt that flares at the hem with a band of vertically pleated linen, contrasting the horizontal direction of the rest of the skirt. The jacket is cropped with giant linen-covered buttons and flared sleeves. While you could wear this with a little pistachio green cashmere tank underneath, it is best treated as a dress and we love the jacket worn as a shirt. With blue satin Roger Vivier mules and a small blue Chanel evening bag, vintage Sybil Connolly is always refined and stylish and her reputation a a textile designer is long and illustrious amongst artists that work in the medium. Made in Dublin, it has a great Lee Radziwill meets Mae West vibe. Lined in navy silk charmeuse, the bust measures 34", shoulder to shoulder 15", outer sleeve 21.5" and length 16". Waist 25", hips 38" and length 41". Excellent condition. sold |
