1980s J. Morgan Puett Raw Silk Dress with Ribbon

a special note to new yorkers J. Morgan Puett is a modern (well, relatively) example of what it's like to be an artist working in the medium of fashion. Her old catalogs were charmingly illustrated books to inspire - modelled by Jane Pratt and Suzanne Vega, the designer had a sort of Oliver Twist vibe that was fabulous. Loose linen blouses paired with cropped pants were romantic but not fantastical - each one grounded in a practical reality. Her stores in Soho (before the chain stores moved in) were like stepping out of New York and into the Old South of eery spanish moss and weeping willows. But J. Morgan Puett is now distributed very carefully in few stores, choosing more freedom over more industry and currently lives on a farm with her partner. And fortunately, her vintage clothes still drift here and there although they are a well-kept secret. A cream raw silk dress trimmed in wine silk grosgrain punctuated with polished gilt ball buttons. Round sleeves and a slightly curved, but loose, construction, there is a central stitched-down pleat running along the spine and discreet pockets along the seams. Vertical bands of ribbon ring the hem and each stripe is dotted with a gold ball. While some think of Dynasty when they hear "the 80s", it is girls like us who fondly remember J. Morgan Puett and her clothes from another time. Lovely with Dries van Noten rough canvas oxfords and a delicate gold ring by Stuart Cathey. Bust measures 36", shoulder to shoulder 15", hips up to 42" and length 42". Excellent, if not flawless, condition. sold
