Vintage needlepoint handbags have a unique charm that is hard to recreate in today's machine-made world. We're sure there are a whole mess of 12-year-old girls in India that would be able to produce a bag like that for 12 cents a week (hey, a penny for every year of your life) but the labor intensive nature of needlepoint makes it sort of off limits nowadays. Maybe that's why crafts like needlepoint and knitting are so dang hot - everyone finally has an appreciation for how much time it takes to make one small thing. And there's a certain old world gentility these bags have that make them look modern when paired with everything from Dries Van Noten cardigans and skirts to a stark black suede Gucci coat. Navy wool with rose flowers and gold and brown scrollwork around the edges, it has a navy leather frame and is lined in black grosgrain. Made for the French Bag Shop in Miami, the design is identical on front and back with little flowers along the sides and brass feet to help the bag stand on its own. 11.5" wide by 8.5" high with a single 6.5" navy leather handle. Excellent condition with the exception of a small nick on the leather frame. $140.00 |
