French designers have a philosophy that makes them positively obsessed with prettiness, even when the clothes are also totally functional. This whole jeans and sneakers American mentality seems sort of sloppy to them and they stick by their frou-frou guns probaly more out of disdain for our national style than for the loyalty to their own. What we have to remember is that the French created fashion and if not for sportswear (the death of couture), venerable houses like Saint Laurent would still be thriving. And while Parisian chic is serious business, it still has a sense of humor that makes all those heels and hourglass silhouettes work. Jean-Charles de Castelbajac put the fun in function with his blow-up ponchos and handpainted blouses with the Declaration of Independence emblazoned across the chest. His clothes have a Japanese ease that goes beautifully with contrasting pieces in skintight fabrics and super-abbreviated hemlines. A gorgeous woven sand linen coat with a single natural webbed tape strap at the shoulder that tucks into a small D-ring buckle. Deep inseam pockets at both hips and wide sleeves, this was made for Ko and Co. Ideally sized for a modern 10 or 12, it is 48.5 long. Excellent, if not flawless, condition. $805.00 |
