Irene Lentz Jones Gibbons was simply known as Irene on the MGM backlots. As the designer who took over when Adrian left in 1942, Irene had come from Bullock's Wilshire where she had been working with the Hollywood golden girls for several years. Dressing everyone from Marlene Dietrich to Elizabeth Taylor, she is best known for her suits - which almost always had a long, narrow skirt. A brilliant black silk bengaline suit with a curtain of braided fringe hanging over the curved waist and cuffed bracelet-length sleeves. Over that signature narrow skirt with a tiny vent in back, the jacket alone is lined in black silk crepe while the skirt remains unlined, hearkening back to a time when women always wore their own slips. One covered button at the throat and one below the navel, the jacket fastens along the hidden placket with smaller buttons with a small notch right at the hem. Quintessential Irene and a little bit of Hollywood glamour from a time long gone, this is absolutely unfussy and fabulous. Bust measures 34", shoulder to shoulder 15", outer sleeve 20.5" and length 24". Skirt has a 25" waist, 36" hips and is 25.5" long. Both are excellent, if not flawless, condition with the exception of one of the small hidden buttons having been replaced. sold |
