Our favorite decade for fashion design is the 1960s, as they seem more like two decades than one. From the prim aftermath of the proper 50s, the introduction of the birth control pill, racial unrest and the Vietnam War made the world turn 180 degrees to face a future they had no clue was there. So when you study the world, and the fashion that springs forth from historical events, Gernreich will be in your face. The man who had the vision and the balls to take his ideas and make them real, he pushed the envelope so far with his topless bathing suit that when he backed off to relatively tame things, you didn't see rebellion - you saw an exciting change. This pale caramel silk crepe dress dates to the mid 60s and is printed with bubble gum pink roses and sweeping strokes of yellow in the background. Inspired by paintings by Kees van Dongen, Gernreich also had a firm grasp on art. Buttoning to the nape in back with a row of covered silk buttons, you can wear this intgral high neckline up or folded over, and unbuttoned. Blouson sleeves with elasticized cuffs, this comes right below the knee and looks beautiful with Chanel taupe slingbacks. Bust measures 34", shoulder to shoulder 15", outer sleeve 24" and length 41". Excellent condition. $735.00 |
