Rudi Gerneich was truly and immensely talented, coming at fashion with the thoughtfulness of a woman. While men are no less adept than women at creating comfortable, elegant women's clothing, they often approach clothing construction from an architect's point of view. Gernreich's philosophy of freeing the body is so much in the same vein as Bonnie Cashin and his idol, Claire McCardell. What all these designers have in common is their use of exquisite fabrics and simple lines that are determined by the body of the woman wearing them and not the rigid vision of the designer. The linings, when present, are better against the skin than warm sun and soft hands. And much like "the girls", Rudi used unconventional fabrics at unconventional times. Wide-wale cotton corduroy for an evening gown? It's freaking brilliant and it's fresh, still to this day. A stunning Empire-waisted evening gown of black over cinnamon with a matching sash that ties in the back. Rounded sleeves and a wide neckline, this is lined in black silk charmeuse. We think this is great with very flat, very strappy gladiator sandals and a almost no other accessories or complicated hair and makeup - just a fabulous, intelligent girl in her fabulous, intelligent Gerneich dress.
