We've reached a time when all the great designers of the 40s and 50s are sadly dying. While new talent always comes into the spotlight, the days of the great couturier are over so the very few old school designers that live carry with them a wealth of knowledge and experience that remains unrivalled in the modern fashion world. Long before the days of celebrity designers and retro knockoffs, names like Norell and Galanos represented a certain philosophy of design more than the clothing if you think about it. A woman worked with seamstresses back then - you were fitted for a simple suit and when there were repairs to be made, you went back to the atelier. New fashion is fabulous but you will never have a relationship with any of the labels as a customer - fashion doesn't work like that anymore. The style and the exclusivity have gone out of it, it is merely about money. From the last great couturier, James Galanos, a black chiffon cocktail dress over a sleevless nude silk crepe liner. Over-embroidered with black dots and daisies, the outlines are filled in with black sequins all around the hem. Gorgeous braided and pleated neckline, the sleeves are totally sheer. The chiffon is exceptional - as light as a cloud. Bust measures 38", shoulder to shoulder 15.5", outer sleeve 23" and length 40.5". Excellent condition. $580.00 |
