1950s Christian Dior Red Satin Evening Coat

classic 50s silhouette Christian Dior made the fashion world swing from one extreme to the next each season. And so you can thank Monsieur Dior for making every silhouette acceptable because no one single shape was his signature - anything that was different was the look of Dior. Most of what young girls know of Dior now is some trashy logo that has as much history as a plastic spoon but we hope you know better. But what Dior has always meant, and still does in the most vulgar sense of the definition, is a luxury that justifies the price. Dior from the days before Saint Laurent. Before Bohan. Dior by Christian Dior himself. A gorgeous cranberry silk dupioni coat with a quilted cobalt silk satin lining. A perfectly smooth flat collar cascading into tight smocking along the yoke and then yards of spectacular textured silk. Cropped, right below the elbow sleeves and no closure, it is utterly simple without being plain - a beautiful marriage of color and line. We love this over an Alaia dress with high high Yves Saint Laurent sandals. Made in France, the quilting is machine done but you can see all the hand stitching inside. When did women stop valuing the craftsmanship of handmade things?? Sized for a modern 6 to 10, this is a heavy coat but the silk is so smooth, inside and out, that there is a perfect balance between the feel of the weight and the slip of the satin. Excellent, if not flawless, condition. To be worn or to be collected. $3200.00
