1960s Calico Patchwork Box Purse

surprise surprise In Japan, mothers send their little darlings off to school with artistic bento boxes holding ridiculously cutesy lunch food that would make any American cafeteria-lady-cum-prison-warden purr like a pink cartoon kitty cat. Sometimes we like to think of our own handbag as a Japanese kid's bento, outfitted with tiny little coin purses and zippered pouches in darling shapes and colors. A sharp woman doesn't just open a box purse to have its contents spill out like jellybeans, everything must have its proper place. And not any box will do, noooooooooo. Calico patchwork will though. Each perky square of printed cotton calico is outlined in red rik-rak. With a gilded turnlock clasp and wooden handle, the interior is also patchwork calico in larger squares with a tiny oval mirror (yes, that's a small red velvet bow under the mirror). An old school name tag reading "Marge Ellison. Southfield MICH" also inside, it measures 10.75" wide by 7.25" tall and 3" deep wth a single 2.75" handle. Excellent condition. sold
