1970s Geoffrey Beene Dress with Tulip Hem

modern norell If you've ever had a Norell wool dress or coat, you know those things are h-e-a-v-y. Never one to skimp on luxurious fabric, Norman Norell had a way of making you feel like a swaddled baby, all wrapped in weighty twill. And while few can come close to the perfection of Norell, someone younger had to take that craftsmanship and sort of free it up a little. That, my friend, would have been Geoffrey Beene. Part Norell, part Margiela and part Rei Kawakubo, his signature tailoring and knack for fabric makes him a perennial American classic. But Beene can design a dress that is so thoroughly edgy and futuristic without it being a costume. A gorgeous, ankle length black dress that's all about long layers that overlap to keep you covered without confining any part of you. A seamed Sweetheart bodice and long panels that almost come off like an upside down tulip, we love this by day with flat Alexander Wang boots and a Rick Owens leather peplum jacket. By night, of course, with YSL heels and a Tom Binns necklace. Split in front and back to reveal the columnar underlayer, it is lined in black silk crepe. Bust measures 36", waist 30", hips 40" and length 58". Excellent condition. $695.00
