1970s Geoffrey Beene Black Linen Wedge Dress

new yorkers still have their own style

editor tested - customer approved

For the most part, women everywhere have a similar style. Blame it on television but with access to so much information, women in California can see how women look in New York just by flipping channels. This was not true back in the 30s when the fashion flavor of each city was as distinct as its landscape. But still, while style may be more homogenized, it differs slightly from city to city and New York women will always have an edgy, sophisticated look that doesn't cut it in fit and laidback California or the more conservative midwest. You just know a New Yorker when you see one. Geoffrey Beene has always had a very city vibe - being a New Yorker at heart, despite growing up in the South. It gives him the reverse of the old "iron fist in a velvet glove"; he's a velvet hand encased in steel and the blend of precise tailoring and feminine silhouettes shows in every piece. A black heavyweight linen wedge, lined in silk crepe de chine, that is close through the shoulder and chest and then flares dramatically. An integral Peter Pan collar that looks more the like outline of a collar at the nape and a stand-up band in front, it buttons along the placket to the top of the ribcage and has pockets over each hip bone. A single inverted pleat slashes through the back and the sleeves are rounded with a single button detail. A stunning summer dress for urban women, this is great with a huge straw tote with black leather handles and very flat black sandals. Measurements are irrelevant since this is cut away from the body and we recommend it for a very small 8 or healthy 6. It is 39.5" in length and in excellent condition. sold
