1970s Mountain Artisans Patchwork Dress

a band of artisans in the 70s Back in the days when "crafting" was chic, sitting around and making things was not a solitary endeavor. Unfortunately, for so many people, the highest form of fashion is one that is made by a machine but the really honest pieces come from a person's own two hands and if they're good at what they do - machine made looks like generic garbage next to handmade. From the San Francisco studio's of North Beach Leather to the Mountain Artisans collective in West Virginia in the 70s, art and fashion were fused throughout that period. Lead designer Dorothy Weatherford won a pair of Coty awards for her work at Mountain Artisans and their one-of-a-kind pieces were eventually sold through tony stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. Dating to the very early 70s, this wildflower cotton dress is patched and tiered through the skirt with a small ruffled collar and sleeves. trimmed in embroidered cotton ribbon, like a little Alpine princess, and looks charming with a messy topknot and Cydwoq leather sandals for Rozae Nichols. The skirt is lined in cherry red cotton. Bust measures 38", waist 26" and length 53". Excellent condition. $305.00
